Recognizing the need for the elderly to continue living meaningful and fulfilled lives in their golden years, Rolly Zabala and Doming Arenas formally organized the BUCCI Senior Citizens’ Network (SCN) in October 2001. Some 40 elderlies enthusiastically joined the movement then and the membership has grown to 171 as of June 2013.
The BUCCI SCN is actively involved in outreach programs such as distributing Bible and Gospel tracts, giving aid to fire and typhoon victims, gift-giving and caroling to Cebu City Hospital patients, visiting shut-ins and sick senior and non-senior church members (even in places as far as Nasipit, Agusan del Norte), assisting in wakes and necrological services (Maasin, Southern Leyte and Tabogon, Cebu), fund raising through (meals-for-a-cause, rummage sales and piso-piso fund campaign), leading in Prayer Breakfast, participating in B-12 activities and ministry fairs, attending Sunday School/Bible Study, singing in choirs and Christmas cantata, greeting and ushering in worship services, organizing summer and Christmas outings/fellowships; initiating SAYAWIT (Sayaw ug Awit) events, decorating the sanctuary and many more.
For the BUCCI SCN, life truly begins at 60!! “To stay youthful, stay useful” is the adage adhered to by these ever-active seniors. For those who are physically able, that means continuing in active service. For those who can no longer move about, that means being active in prayer and quiet service. We are never called to retire from life and coast home to heaven. Let’s make sure that old age does not stop us from bearing fruit (Psalm 92:14). We need to keep going for God.
